Sparsely Labeled Gallatin Forest Recreation Map Released

By Lucia Stewart, 10-08-07

The long-awaited motor vehicle travel plan for the Gallatin National Forest became available to the public today— with maps not clearly marked.

Particular areas/trails are now closed to motorized travel unless designated open, with up to a $5,000 penalty. The new maps are the only place to locate these closures. Updating trail route markers/signs are only now getting underway.

Deciphering these maps is a challenge. Some organizations are already calling for a redo.

Federal judge recommends motorized restrictions in Gallatin Forest be tightened

By DANIEL PERSON Chronicle Staff Writer

Motorized groups seeking to overturn part/all of the Gallatin National Forest Travel Plan hit a snag when Magistrate Judge Lynch recommended their claims against National Forest Service be rejected.

The judge also ruled in favor of enviro groups that claimed the travel plan allowed too much motorized use in a swath of the forest that includes the Gallatin Crest.

Lynch’s recommendations will go to U.S. District Judge Donald Malloy, who’ll make a final ruling.
